How I started my channel
I have always been interested in the idea of being a "storyteller". Early in life, I was known for being "the kid who always has something going on in his life" and I never really embraced that part of me until I realized the power it had among people. It drew an audience in, listening to your every word, waiting and anticipating what you might say next. Needless to say, I wanted to become the best storyteller as can be. I started my first YouTube channel "DOPEMATIONS" on May 5, 2017, and filled with excitement, I wanted to make and upload my first-ever video. However, facing fifth-grade-level writer's block, I felt that my stories were too common and predictable. In an attempt to get more brain power and think of better stories, I started to eat my favorite snack from Hong Kong: Frutips (a fruit-flavored, chewy sweet). As I was chewing, I finally figured out the perfect story to tell: my beloved, exotic snack from across the world. It was perfect! It was a completely original idea that I was sure not a single kid in the United States has ever even uttered the word "Frutips" in their life. It was also an opportunity to share a part of where I'm from with the whole world. The joy I felt that night was indescribable, and it is a memory that I cherish as I began to take the first steps in my journey to tell my stories to an audience.
My Personal Favorites:
Originally uploaded in September 2017, this video has become the most viewed and popular video on my YouTube channel, amassing over 40,000 views in total! It has been played in numerous middle school classrooms and was even once played in the high school auditorium for a 5th-grade orientation! This is definitely one of my favorite videos that I've made because it captures my humor, wit, and early-animation ability.
An end to a chapter in my life, this video holds a special place in my heart. Three years of middle school flew by very quickly, and at the end of it all, I looked back at the memories I made with my friends, classmates, teachers, and everybody who supported me through all of it. Due to COVID-19, my school could not host a graduation ceremony and instead had everyone caravan all around the town. There were many cheers and congratulations, and though it was sad to see the end of an era, I smiled at all the great times I had.
An exciting new experience and a beginning to another chapter of my life, high school was coming my way and I was ready to go! At least that's how I wished I felt when high school first began during the pandemic. Cooped up in my room, I could only meet all my great teachers and classmates through a screen and talk to them through a microphone. At the time, the pandemic and COVID-19 stirred a lot of fear into people, including my family, so they wanted to keep me from going to any public space, including the high school. Luckily, I had friends who weren't as scared and I got to hear what the first day of high school was like for them!
